Malaysia’s overall vehicle sales increased by 15.3% yoy in December 2007 to 42,214 units, compared to 36,608 units sold in December 2006. The national car segment saw sales growing by 27.2% yoy to 25,561 units in December 2007 compared to 20,088 units in the same month previous year. The positive sales trend since June 2007 is expected to continue and spill over to 2008 as market conditions and consumer sentiments are favorable. With the announcement of the National Automotive Policy, the pressures in competition on a global scale had forced consolidation in the industry to have better economies of scale in order to survive. The liberalization of the industry could result in more manufacturing plants being set up by foreign automakers, increased foreign direct investments and the transfer of technology to local manufacturers. In return for the collaboration and partnership, the foreign investor will, through its Malaysian counterpart, have access to the large and fast-growing Asean market which is expected to reach 2 million new cars and light commercial vehicles annually by 2010.
